My nephew Doug Hammerschmitt took us to visit the Saugus Iron Works, in Massachusetts. On a tour of the works
they pointed out this broken handled water jug, sitting on a beam beneath a window, with the blue light of the
sky pouring in over it. They said the men who had worked the forge drew common refreshment from it. And here
it was today, like eternity, like a well, a source of life, a promise, a womb full under the light of heaven,
with the spirits of those men.
