John Roberts, my wife's sister's husband, photographed a woman signing a guest book during a cruise. I was moved by the substance of the light in John's photograph, and his exquisite composition. The woman's act of signing the guestbook, of making a simple mark on an insignificant page, of leaving a trace of her presence, a proof of life, is a potent reminder to me of the permanence we create each day, by insignificant acts, in the vastness and impermanence of the history of our race.
