I was completely inspired by Gregory Rec's photo in the Portland Press Herald of Sam Whitener, a Sternman in a lobstering operation. The morning light, the cold, the crowd of seagulls exploding out of the image. I had to paint this, and had been thinking about its execution for a long while. (For the year I was not actually painting new works, I was painting 'in my head.')
